Stop Scoliosis progression and improve spinal support using the Gyrotonic Methodology

WHAT IS SCOLIOSIS?

Scoliosis is a lateral (sideways) curvature of the spine. It can affect any part of the spine, and can consist of either a “C-curve” (more minor) or “S-curve”, which consists of two curvatures, the original abnormal curve and a compensatory curve elsewhere in the spine. Very often, the spine may rotate to balance the body, and that’s why Gyrotonic exercise can be so helpful as treatment of this condition.

Scoliosis more often affects children (“structural” scoliosis), but can also affect adults later in life - this is called “functional” scoliosis. It is caused by imbalances and muscle inefficiencies brought on by poor posture and common habits such as folding one leg over the other, carrying a purse over one shoulder, and favoring one leg while standing. These behaviors can create imbalances and persistent muscle spasms, leading to scoliosis. Both types of scoliosis are amenable to improvement or correction using the Gyrotonic Methodology!

WHAT DOES SCOLIOSIS DO TO A BODY?

Long term, scoliosis can cause chronic back pain, problems with movement, a hunched back!, poor functioning of the organs (including decreased capacity of the lungs, poor digestion), headaches, pinched nerves, and possible spinal fractures in the lumbar or thoracic spine. It is quite important to stop progression of this condition to create a healthy, strong, balanced body!

The program was developed by Paul Horvath, Doctor of Physical Therapy and former trainer of the Romanian Olympic gymnastics team. The scoliosis program consists of a five-part exercise sequence using the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® developed by his brother Juliu Horvath. Paul has utilized the Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis methods with orthopedic patients at the Rheintalklinik in Bad Krozingen, Germany, and taught the program to several Gyrotonic Master Trainers around the globe. At Movement Center of Medfield, Deborah Saparoff who has trained for this program with Doctor of Physical Therapy Uwe Herbstreit – offers this program in private sessions at the Center.

Improvement will be noticed within weeks, depending on the degree of curvature, age, lifestyle, and physical fitness of the individual. The full program may take as little as six months or as long as one year.
